COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Basic English: Develops the essential skills needed to meet academic content standards and improve performance in writing, test preparation, and vocabulary.

Practical English:  A complete course in life-skills applications of the English language.

English Composition:  A complete course in the fundamentals of writing, with examples of real-world writing.

Senior Literature: Stories, myths, poems, and biographies by well-known authors from all over the world.  Also provides development of literary and composition skills through assignments and activities.

English I:  Study of literature selections from various forms of poetry, short stories, speeches and other non-fiction as well as skill development in literary skills and composition.

English II:  Study of world literature selections from various genre, as well as skill development in literary skills and composition.

English III:  American literature selections as well as composition, grammar, and literary skills practice.

English IV:  English literature selections as well as composition, grammar and literary skills review.

Basic Math:  Provides a solid, well-balanced approach to building math skills in whole numbers, basic arithmetic operations, and mastery of simple geometry and algebra.

Consumer Math: Presents key math concepts for successful adult living, from buying groceries to budgeting for housing, education and travel.

Pre-Algebra:  Designed as a foundation to algebra, this comprehensive program builds the important skills and confidence needed to take algebra.

Basic Algebra: A slower paced workbook approach to the basic concepts of algebra.

Algebra I:  Provides essential concepts and skills needed to succeed in first-year algebra, making real-life connections.

Basic Geometry: A slower paced workbook approach to the basic concepts of geometry.

Geometry: Prepares students with review to apply their algebra skills to solve problems in geometry.

Algebra II:  Contains lessons related to linear equations, systems of inequalities, probability models, logarithms, regression and matrices.

Pre-Calculus: Prepares students for a course in calculus by integrating concepts and skills related to calculus throughout.  Gives students the opportunity to explore sequences and series, combinatorics, probability, and statistical analysis.

US History :  A two-volume series that includes Discovery to the Civil War and Industrialization to the Present. Intended for General Diploma Students.

US History v 2:  A college prep survey course of US history from Discovery to the Present.

World History:   Survey series that covers Prehistoric Times through the Present.

Economics:  Provides an understanding of economics, economic systems, government, supply and demand, business, labor and wages, money and banking, investments, the global economy, and consumers and economic decision-making.

American Government: A survey course of the American way of government, including its roots, the writing of the Constitution, the federal government design and function, state government design and function, and the freedoms and responsibilities of American citizens.

World Geography:  Introduces students to different regions of the world, the physical and human features of the earth, and cultural topics of special interest.

US Geography:  Introduces students to different regions of the US, the physical and human features of the earth, and cultural topics of special interest.

Introduction to General Science:  Introduces students to the basic concepts and principals of life, earth, and physical science and builds the fundamental science skills needed to succeed.

Life Science: The study of the basis of life, energy for living things, patterns of behavior, good health, reproduction, and ecology.

Physical Science:  The study of physics as it applies to force, motion, and energy; chemistry as it applies to the makeup of matter and the nature of matter.

Earth Science:  The study of the planet earth, its changing surface, and atmosphere as well as the universe.

Biology:  The study of organisms: how they develop, reproduce and survive in various environments.

Chemistry: The study of the elements found in nature, their composition and their reaction to other elements, temperature changes, and other environmental changes.

Health/PE:  The study of health factors that affect individuals; the 5 senses, the muscles, the bones and skeleton, the nervous system and the circulatory system.  90 hours of physical activity must be logged and verified in order to meet the PE requirement of this two-part, one credit course.

French I & II:  This curriculum combines 2 courses of French in one.  Requires a CD ROM drive, speakers and microphone.  Teaches both spoken and written language skills.  Includes a grammar workbook and vocabulary book.  2 credits

Spanish I & II:  This curriculum combines 2 courses of Spanish in one.  Requires a CD ROM drive, speakers and microphone.  Teaches both spoken and written language skills.  Includes a grammar workbook and vocabulary book.  2 credits

Computer Literacy:  Fosters learning and success for students of all ability levels with step-by-step instruction

Keyboarding:  Step-by-step instruction on CD of alphabetic and numeric keyboarding with assessments and games.

Arts & Humanities:  A richly diverse sampling of literature, historical documents, and fine arts covering 5 continents, providing students with the background and enrichment they need for many precollege requirements.

Basic Art:  Basic instruction on CDs of drawing, painting and various art media.  Contains projects for which the student is graded.
